Negative Effects of Globalization on Culture Globalization is an irresistible trend of our times. There are always heated debates when it comes to its effects on culture. Some people think globalization can dissolve boundaries and lead to common values shared worldwide, while others hold the view that cultural diversity is at stake and globalization will eventually make the whole world dominated by a single culture. From my perspective, globalization does have the following negative influences on culture. First and foremost, western nations, particularly the United States, impose cultural values on others. Some people call this " cultural imperialism" because the West promotes its culture as more worth, or correct. Western companies also have the domination over news media and Internet services to maintain this influence. Similarly, western nations are less likely to celebrate other culture’s holidays and traditions and this further minimizes the importance of other cultures. Also, present education, legal and power structures reflect western ideas and philosophies. Not having access to their own cultures easily, combined with an education system geared toward the dominant society can be a lethal combination for non-dominant cultures. What’s more, language is a key expression of cultural diversity. Globalization marginalizes some languages and may even cause some languages to die out. Certainly, English is widely used as a second or third language, which helps the globalization in business; however, if business communities see more benefits in speaking Spanish or Chinese, they learn those instead. Since the world’s dominant economies speak English, other languages have become less important. UNESCO worries that English will replace more than 75% of Ianguages in a century. Last but not the least, large multinational companies promote their products globally, and brands like Coca-Cola , KFC and Apple are prevalent across the world. Thus the local companies are edged out of the market and the multinational companies impose American or European consumer trends on other cultures. For example , the above-mentioned fast food industry promotes the value of production efficiency. As a result, traditional cuisine appears to be less cost-effective and profitable than fast food, causing traditional food have no competitiveness compared them. This kind of cultural invasion destroys the integrity of the receiving culture in an unobtrusive way that may "drown out" local cultural influences. It is undeniable that globalization helps to interconnect the world, and make various cultural groups in direct contact with each other. Nevertheless, its negative effects on culture should not be ignored. Efforts should be made to keep our world from the problems listed.
