According to the blue paper released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China has become the second-largest luxury product market after Japan. It predicts that China is set to become the world’s No. 1 luxury market in 2015. As the Chinese people have always liked the pursuit of world rankings, being the world’s No. 2 has become a hot topic. China’s Luxury Consumption Needs to Be Slowed Down Nowadays, as people’s living standards are improving, an increasing number of people choose to purchase luxury goods to gain a sense of pride. Some express that it is an inevitable result of economic growth and there’s nothing wrong to enjoy one’s success after hard work. While others hold objection to this idea, maintaining that despite the fast growth of China’s economy, most people in China still can not lead a comfortable life. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, it is a wise decision to slow down China’s luxury consumption. The first and foremost approval of this proposal is that slowing down China’s luxury consumption can narrow the gap between the rich and the poor. As we all know, Chinese economy has achieved great progress since innovation and opening policy was implemented, still quite a number of people are out of employment or make little money which can afford their life narrowly. According to a survey, among 13 million people in China, only 5% of them belong to the richest class, the rest leading an average life. The more ostentatious display of wealth would widen the gap between the rich and the poor, thus enhancing social tensions. Therefore, slowing down China’s luxury consumption will surely be helpful to maintain a harmonious society in China. The second approval of the proposal is due to the fact that luxury consumption can increase the vanity of people. China is a country where we have our own lifestyles and ideas about consumption. What we need to do is be right for our own and be ourselves. It is not the luxury goods that make one a respectable man, and living with high quality requires to be harmonious with the world and the nature instead of too many luxury accessories to show off his own accomplishment. I think the relentless pursuit of luxury products of some Chinese is in some way caused by the lack of belief. Since people have no firm belief to rely on, material enjoyment is regarded as the ultimate purpose of life. Therefore, we should change people’s view regarding wealth as the only way to happiness. With everything said above, I have made my firm stand thoroughly approving of slowing down China’s luxury consumption. Admittedly, China’s economy has grown greatly, nevertheless, we should be aware that not all areas develop equally well and some areas like the northwest districts are still underdeveloped. We need to use our wealth wisely and help those who need our help. No matter in which situation, at whenever time, thrift deserves to be advocated. In a nutshell, I strongly support the idea of slowing down China’s luxury consumption.
