Officials
In recent years, with the rapidly developing economy, the government put forward more positive policies to encourage college students to devote themselves to volunteer activities. The government regards volunteer teaching as an effective measure for rural education: at the same time it is also an access to solve the increasingly serious problem of college students’ employment. Chinese education experts and scholars believe that college education is an opportunity to exercise college students themselves. It helps to improve students’ initiative, as well as the spirit of arduous efforts. In addition, it is beneficial for college students to cultivate their consciousness of social service. At the same time, as college students are China’s advanced intellectuals, teaching activities also cultivate their sense of responsibility and mission effectively. To be a volunteer teacher is not only a meaningful contribution for children in rural areas, but also an unforgettable experience for college students to train their abilities. Government officials believe that through the state investment in education career and encouraging students to participate in volunteer teaching activities, the lagging education in poor mountainous areas will be greatly improved. Thus, the cultural level of the rural population will make a full enhancement. In the meanwhile, the college students will have more choices after they graduate from school. So it is safe to say that volunteer teaching is an effective measure to promote the harmonious development of society.
College students
The latest research results show that the proportion of students who apply to be volunteer teachers is declining gradually, even in face of the great pressure of present employment. Many college students still choose to stay in the city to pursue their yearning life. They think that to be a teacher in remote areas is a waste of youth under the condition that they have more ambitious targets for the future. There are a few graduated college students having become a teacher in remote areas, holding the belief that they can strengthen themselves, but because of the opposition from family and the harsh local conditions, they will choose to leave before long.
Lin Yuanhong, a junior student in Changchun Normal University: I participate in the social practice activities during the summer vacation and usually I choose to be an English teacher for the local children in some rural areas. When asked to make a summary of the education life for two months, I can only say these children are so simple that I feel really comfortable to be with them. While mentioning the future plans, I am sure that these activities are nothing more than a short-term social practice before graduation. I still want to go back and find a job in Changchun. After all, my families and friends are there.
Wang Shuo, just out of college: I have never thought to teach in remote areas. The reasons are very simple: teacher itself is not a well-paid profession: it feels like a waste of time spending several years in remote areas. The girls are persuasive, but we boys have to make money for the family after a few years, so we’d better struggle to achieve our goals in the city.

答案
Is Volunteer Teaching Good or Bad? Volunteer teaching, which has been implemented in China for many years, refers to a supporting activity which asks graduate students to teach children in rural areas so that they have the equal opportunity of receiving education. Along with the development of China’s economy, the education level improves rapidly in most areas. However, the lagging education in remote rural areas still worries the whole society. Therefore, the government puts forward the policy of volunteer teaching. But is it a good thing or a bad idea? Here we have two different opinions from the officials and college students respectively. The officials believe that the policy of volunteer teaching has several advantages. It is not only an effective measure to solve the long-lasting education problems in remote areas, but also a helpful step to alleviate the present pressure of employment. In addition, to be a volunteer teacher is a precious opportunity for graduates to exercise themselves and at the same time foster their sense of selfless dedication and responsibility. What’s more, this act will finally promote the overall literacy of remote areas and do good to the establishment of our harmonious society. While the college students hold that they would rather stay in the city than teach in rural areas. They consider it a waste of youth, and maintain that they have ambitious goals for their future, which cannot be achieved by being a volunteer teacher. Seeing from these two opinions, it is rather hard to tell whether volunteer teaching is good or bad. But as far as I am concerned, everyone has his own thought. You cannot assume that the officials’ saying is absolutely right or one student’s idea represents all. Volunteer teaching is surely a beneficial policy, and some students’ concern is not nonsense. I really believe that if the government can help solve the key considerations of volunteers, the policy will surely do good to the whole nation. After all, what goes around comes around.
