答案Managers are responsible for seeing that others their subordinates perform the work. To do this effectively managers must become skilled in five functions of management discussed in the last chapter. And managers need to develop certain skills to be successful in a particular position. The technical skills are necessary. While it is not necessary for managers to know all the technical aspects of the work they are managing they must have enough technical knowledge to communicate effectively with their subordinates and superiors. And they must have enough technical knowledge to gain some credibility with their subordinates. Technical skills are most needed by first line managers and least critical to top level managers. In addition the conceptual skills are also important for managers. Conceptual skills involve the ability to think in abstract terms the ability to see how parts fit together to form the whole. Creative thinking is behind the development of many innovative products and ideas. Rather than concentrating solely on a short term solution to an immediate crisis good managers put all of their smaller decisions in a broader long term perspective that benefits the total organization. Managers at all levels and in all areas need conceptual skills but none more so than top level managers. Choosing the venue for a conference absolutely deserve the organizer’s attention. Of course we call a meeting to deal with important issues, but if the working environment and accommodations turn out to be a nightmare, the achievements of this conference might be greatly discounted due to the attendees’ low spirits. Preferable I’d like to be present at a meeting, which is held at a five-star offshore holiday resort. I’ve encountered all kinds of poor speakers. Some of them pretend to be authorities, finding faults with this and that, which makes the audience insecure. Others however, have bad habits such as telling lewd jokes, which are offensive to the respectable ladies and gentlemen. There’re speakers who include as much obscure jargons as possible to show off their so-called erudition. I have to take a Webster’s dictionary to understand them.
