答案 Should Old Buildings Be Preserved Urbanization in China is taking place at an unprecedented pace and will continue over the next few decades. In order to construct new buildings, many old ones have to be razed on account of the limited space of a city. I concede that the useless dilapidated buildings ought to be pulled down, but we should pay more attention to the protection of the still valuable ones. Admittedly, urban planners should of course consider the city’s current and prospective utilitarian needs. For example, if an additional hospital is needed to adequately serve the health-care needs, the government can consider demolishing some shabby buildings to make enough room. Or if a new high-speed railway station is needed to ensure the economic boom, the old structures that stand in the way can be pulled down. However, not all the old buildings should give way to urban construction. It has been well acknowledged that historic sites are to be preserved, like buildings that once served as the home of a significant historical figure or the location of an important historical event. Such old buildings remind us not only of our history, but also of our tradition and culture. It is hard to imagine pulling down these precious buildings at the foolish excuse of modernization. In addition, historic sites have great attraction for tourists from home and abroad, which can significantly boost the tourism of a city. For instance, many foreign tourists are prone to visit Xi’an and Beijing, where many historic constructions are well preserved. Moreover, before knocking down an old building, people should first study its aesthetic and architectural value—apart from historical events with which it might be associated. A building might be one of only a few that represent a certain architectural style. Or it might be especially beautiful, perhaps as a result of the craftsmanship or certain materials employed in its construction. The striking examples are the old foreign-style buildings in Qingdao and Harbin. With special aesthetic values, these buildings are greatly appreciated by both Chinese and foreigners. In conclusion, we should make sure that the old buildings to be destroyed are really devoid of historic, aesthetic and architectural value. Old buildings do not necessarily mean useless buildings. As for those still valuable old constructions, we should try every effort to protect them, for once destroyed, they will be un-retrievable forever .
