The foreign students are given every opportunity to enjoy and benefit from his stay in the United States. In the first place, he is carefully selected on the basis of his scholastic ability, language proficiency, character and personality, aims and future prospects. The thorough screening of applications is designed to eliminate those students least likely to benefit from living and studying in a foreign county, and hence, least likely to return to their native lands. Before he leaves, the successful candidate is usually given a month’s briefing on the important aspects of American life. Upon arriving in the United States, he is met by members of the committee for the Exchange of Foreign Students or by representatives of the organization sponsoring him.
