The most outstanding feature of the graph is that the percentage of outlay on food in the urban families was always smaller than that of the rural families during this period. For both rural and urban households, despite some slight fluctuation between 1985 and 1995, the percentage of outlay on food declined significantly during this period, from about 62% to less than 50% for the former and from about 57% to about 40% for the latter. To some extent, the significant drop in the amount of salary spent on food reveals the great improvement of living standard.
