A senior American defense official says the Pentagon may replace Army Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez as the top U.S. commander in Iraq. But the official speaking on condition of anonymity denies that the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal is the reason. The development comes one day after the U.S. army denied a report suggesting General Sanchez may have witnessed the abuse of detainees by American soldiers at the Abu Ghraib prison. The report, which the U.S. military says is false, appeared in Sunday’s Washington Post newspaper.
