She got up early to be ready for the post at her birthday. From her second floor window she could see the postman.
Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn’t forget her mother’s birthday though she seldom wrote at other times. Her husband had been made Mayor. And Myra herself was busy working for the aged and had got a medal for it. It the past two years Myra had managed to come and see her three times. She was proud of her daughter. The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday.
Even if Myra didn’t come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that; she was excited—like a child. She would enjoy her day.
The helper had given her rooms an extra clean and had brought a card and a bunch of flowers. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake for her. Johnnie, the little boy from the ground floor had been up with a box of candies, and said he would not go out to play until the postman came.
"I guess you’ll get lots of presents," he said.
Yes, but what would she like for her present? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new coat or a table lamp or a travel book with pictures, or a little clock.. . So many lovely things.
She stood by the window, watching. All of sudden she saw the postman turning round the corner. Her heart beat fast when Johnnie ran to the gate. The next moment Johnnie was knocking at her door.
He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends and the fourth was sealed, in Myra’s writing. Seeing no parcel the old lady felt disappointed. Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post, it would come by parcel post later. She must be patient.
She opened the envelope and found a card and a piece of paper in it. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday-Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold.
The cheque fluttered to the floor. Slowly the old lady stooped to pick it up. "My lovely presents". Having uttered these words, the old lady tore the cheque with trembling fingers into little bits.
Why did the old lady get up early and was excited that day? Because______
