The Benefits and Pitfalls of Opening Universities to the Public Nowadays visiting to prestigious universities is becoming increasingly popular. Many parents believe such visits can encourage children to study hard for a bright future, but with a large number of visitors, universities are so crowded that they look like scenic spots more than institutions of higher learning. For me, opening universities to the public does us more good than harm. Firstly, visits to prestigious universities can inspire children to study hard so as to get into one of those universities for a promising future. When I was a college student, it could often be seen that groups of high school students came to visit our university. Looking at their yearning eyes, I could actually feel their strong wish to become one of the students here. Also, it was just a drop-in at Peking University that encouraged me to take the postgraduate entrance examination and pursue my postgraduate study there. What’s more, opening to the public is a good way for universities to have exchanges with the outside so that they can improve themselves according to suggestions from visitors. For example, my university made a decision to reopen the museum of our university history after some visitors suggested it. Such a decision could help advocate the history and the ideology of our university such that it could draw the attention of more people, either at home or abroad. Last but not least, the pitfalls of opening universities to the public can be avoided through appropriate measures. For example, universities can set a certain day as its opening day so that it would be crowded on the special day but maintain the academic atmosphere most of the time. Also, universities can open only part of the campus to the public, like the playground or the history museum. By this means, universities can be open to the outside on the one hand, and stay as a sound place for academic study on the other hand. All in all, the harm brought by opening universities to the public can be offset by the good it does. While opening to the public, universities shall at the same time take effective measures to make sure that they are still institutions of higher learning in the eyes of the students.
