Ruth thinks that it is wrong to use company stationery for private correspondence because _______.
Martin: Why do you think it is wrong to use company stationery for private correspondence?
Ruth: I think it is wrong in principle because you are getting something for nothing. I mean, no one has said that you can take company stationery and you are not paying for it. Also, you are doing it in the time when you are being paid to work.
Martin: But you are talking about absolute standards of honesty which don’t exist. Nobody, however high their standards are, can claim to be absolutely pure. Most people take office stationery, don’t pay train fares-that kind of thing.
Ruth: But that doesn’t mean that you need to lower your standards because everybody else does. Legally, you should pay that fare whether the conductor asked for it or not.
Martin: Some people feel that because transport is publicly owned, they somehow have the right to cheat. Some people go even further by saying they are paying tax, and they can cheat anybody who has any connection with rates, taxes or anything.
Ruth: That sounds really ridiculous.
