Your work I work as a journalist for the China Daily. I’ve been there for just over six years. Whilst I was at university, studying journalism, a professor recommended me to an editor at the China Daily. I went for a series of interviews and aptitude tests and was eventually offered a job as a trainee. After six months, I was promoted and given a position in the sports department. I work full-time. The China Daily, like most newspapers in China, doesn’t employ many part-time journalists. Very. Almost every weekend, I cover a major sporting event and during the week I usually interview sportsmen and sportswomen or other people connected with sport in some way, such as trainers and officials. I’m planning to take some time off from my job to get some further education in the UK. Then, I intend to continue with my current job. I’d like to continue being a journalist for the next several years, but eventually I’d like to become the editor of the sports section—obviously after the current editor has left or retired! Visitors to your hometown Two things that certainly need to be improved are the level of cleanliness and the level of pollution. A lot of tourists complain about these things and most residents would probably agree with them. It is not a good advertisement for our city—or indeed our country. I think that almost all foreign visitors come by plane, because using any other form of transport would take too long. People coming from other parts of China arrive by plane, train or bus. Those that come by plane are usually wealthier. As I’m sure you know, there are plenty of sights in Beijing—the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven to name but a few. As well as seeing the sights, visitors go shopping. It’s common to see both Chinese and foreign visitors taking photographs. Definitely. My hometown is Beijing, which is a big tourist destination in China. Of course, many foreign visitors come to Beijing, but they are easily outnumbered by the number of Chinese people who visit from other parts of the country. The busiest times are during the national holidays and during the summer. Your daily routine Yes, I do—particularly with regard to my work. It is important for me to be well-organised since journalists have deadlines to meet that cannot be changed. If a story isn’t ready on time, it won’t be published—it’s as simple as that. we can’t tell our readers that the China Daily will be published later today because a journalist didn’t file his story on time! In my personal life, I’m more flexible. 1 have a rough idea of what I’m going to do each day, but I usually don’t stick to it rigidly. I think it’s pretty much the same as that of any other working person. I get up at six thirty and get ready to go to work. I leave home at about quarter to eight and get into the office at just after eight thirty. I have lunch just before midday and finish work at between five and six, depending on how much work I have and how quickly I get through it. In the evenings, I might go out with friends or colleagues or I might have a quiet evening at home. First, I see which work has to be done most urgently. Second, I consider how long it will probably take to complete each assignment. Then I see if I have any appointments. Then, I put these things together and create a rough timetable in my mind. I tend to do this on a weekly basis rather than a daily one if possible. If it were possible, I’d start work a little earlier in the morning and finish a little earlier in the afternoon.
