A: Mr. Wang, thank you for taking our interview. It’s the first time for your work to be translated into English and published overseas. Your book is about Su Shi, a famous Chinese writer in the Northern Song dynasty. Can you briefly introduce Su Shi to our English readers who may not be very familiar with him?
B：好的。苏轼是中国古代的杰出作家。他是“唐宋八大家”之一，并开创了新的词作风格。但苏轼的成就不仅限于文学，他为官期间为百姓做了很多事，大大改善了民生。
A: You just mentioned ci. What’s this genre of literature, and how did Su Shi contribute to its development?
B：你可以把词理解成诗的一种。它和中国传统诗歌最明显的区别在于，诗每一行的字。数必须是一样的，而词由长句和短句组成。另外在苏轼之前，诗和词的功能是完全不同的。诗用来表达志向，而词一般用来抒发感情。但苏轼拓展了词的题材，在词作中谈论政治、军事，并且语言风格较为直接。
A: Due to economic and social stability, the cultural life in the Song dynasty was the richest across all times in ancient China. There were a large number of writers and literary works and it was common for writers to be politicians at the same time. The cultural background of the Northern Song dynasty played an important role in Su Shi’s career as a writer. And you just said that he also worked in the government for some time. What did this political experience mean to him?
B：做官的经历让苏轼对政治有了深入的了解，因此他的散文经常包含对国家政策的评论和思考。这些文章有很高的文学和历史价值。另一方面，苏轼人生中的重大磨难都因政治而起，但他也因此产生了许多深刻的人生感悟，写成了一篇篇引人深思的作品。
