1 Visiting and staying in a foreign country is difficult at the best of times. When you must speak a language that isn’t your own it can cause severe social and practical conundrums. I firmly believe that, even if you can speak a little of the local language, there will always be issues. Firstly, looking at the social side of things, it can be very difficult to communicate with others, therefore the ability to make friends and other social connections will also be incredibly hard. A good example of this is when I went to England for a summer camp to help me improve my English. I got there and there were no other Chinese speakers around. Because of this, I didn’t really make that many new friends, although there was one girl I liked and we tried really hard to chat with other, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Moving on to the practical issues, the most obvious is getting around. Without some knowledge of the area and the ability to ask for directions, it would be very easy to become disoriented and lost. The other major implication would be the basic necessities: a place to stay, food and so on, not to mention the cultural differences and issues that can arise. A solution to this, one that many Chinese actually do, is to travel in group with a translator when on holiday, or go to a place with other Chinese speakers, if they are planning to stay for a long time. Overall, I thoroughly agree with the statement above, and although there are solutions to nearly any problem that presents itself, overcoming these in itself can be considered social and practical issues. (281 words ) 2 To live as an expat in a country where one’s native language is not spoken can be quite daunting. In fact, many misadventures and awkward situations often result from being forced to speak a foreign language, and thus I concur with the statement. It is highly likely that misunderstandings between local people and expat residents will occur in social situations. This is especially true with languages that employ words with many meanings but similar pronunciations. For example, Chinese uses a tonal system, where a single word, spoken with a different tone, can have a multitude of definitions. To people whose native tongues have no tonal aspect, this can be very difficult to master, and can cause embarrassing situations where one accidentally says something offensive without meaning to. In the same vein, some local people may take advantage of foreign visitors who do not have a full grasp of the language. If they are unable to converse regularly with people, or at least understand the majority of what people are saying, the locals may conspire to cheat them, for example, on the price of goods, if none is listed, or perhaps sell goods that are not authentic. For some, this need to learn a new language is a challenge readily accepted, a new experience to be mastered and then boasted of to their friends later. However, for those who have vital work to do, or are not staying long, having to speak the language of a foreign land is troublesome and not conducive to a productive experience. In sum, living in a country where one must speak a foreign language leads to all manner of misunderstandings and embarrassing situations, and can even affect one’s livelihood in the worst cases. Thus, if one truly wishes to live as an expat in a place where one’s native language is not common, one should make sure to have a firm grasp of the local language first. (322 words)
