According to a study conducted by China Population Communication Center, 75% of high school students in China admitted that they found it difficult to talk with their parents. As a college student, what measures would you recommend to bridge the widening generation gap? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

Shall We Talk? During a family reunion, my little cousin, once an energetic and naughty boy, now sat silently and kept to himself. He has become a mystery, an enigma, as was complained by my aunt. When communication is missing between two generations, I believe the best solution is through mutual understanding and joint efforts. Firstly, young people should take the initiative in sharing with parents their thoughts and feelings otherwise hiding. Technological changes have brought about convenience and efficiency as well as solitary feelings. The availability of Internet enables young people to find friends of the same interest online, but they are reluctant to talk to parents who still consider the Net as a tool used for fishing or trapping. While shortening the distance between two localities, technology is yet widening the gap between two hearts. It’s thus advisable for children to take a step forward and expound to parents how new things work and what they think of the world. Secondly, only when parents throw off their parental airs and try to listen to and understand their children can this two-way communication work. One of the factors scaring off sensitive and rebellious children is the stubbornness of parents. When a child does something confusing, don’t jump to any snap judgment that sentences them to reprimand and punishment. Instead, try to put yourselves in their shoes and explain rather than to exclaim. Constant nagging and scolding, though for children’s own good, repel them even more. Parents should therefore pay attention to their manners and be more patient while interacting with children. A case in point is the movie The Music Never Stopped. In the movie, conflicts happen frequently between a young man and his father due to their divergent opinions about politics and taste of music. But as the father tries hard to repair their relationship with patience when his son is in trouble, he finally successfully reconnects with his child. To bridge the generation gap, what parents need is love and patience. Finally, in order to get to know one another, it’s essential for families to spend sufficient quality time together. Boarding school has cut short the precious family time, not to mention college students who return home twice a year. As is illustrated in The Descendants, "a family seems exactly like an archipelago, all part of the same whole, but still separate and alone, and always drifting slowly apart". Watch a TV show together, play a game or enjoy a meal. Whatever you do, the most important thing is to keep each other company and create beautiful memories. To conclude, mutual understanding and joint efforts from both parents and child will help to narrow the generation gap.
