W: It seems to me that I’ ve spent a lot of my life worrying about my weight. Although I’ m not really so very fat, I want to weigh less.
M: You don’t have much of a problem. Did you know that weight control is a big money industry? There are companies putting out products to eat or drink, machines to do all sorts of things, and some of the products are complicated and very expensive. Then there are innumerable books and articles telling people what to do and what not to do.
W: What do you think of health clubs?
M: Most of them are all right, I suppose, but I’ ve heard of some instances where people have taken one-to-five-year memberships in a club that has failed financially and they lost their money.
W: Of course we’ ve all heard of those expensive spots where the very rich can go. They have luxurious living, but are also on a strict program of diet and exercise and even group therapy. I’ ve heard that many of the customers have to go back every so often because they gain the weight they lost back again.
M: I’ ve seen TV ads for going on what they say are scientific weight control methods under sonic degree of medical supervision. Usually the people don’ t live in, but go for treatments often. The fact that so many programs are offered must mean that there is no one answer for everyone except, perhaps, sensible eating habits. Moderate exercise is almost always good, but vigorous exercise may be too much for those people that are not well or are of advanced age. I think that weight control is an individual thing. Some people find weight loss near to impossible for them.
W: Is being fat caused by a lack of will power or by body chemistry?
M: I’ m sure the problem isn’ t the same for everybody, but I believe the consensus of opinion is that it is seldom body chemistry. The people with severe weight problems usually have some type of psychological hang-up.
W: Did you know that they have self-help groups formed?
M: I’ ve even heard of a group that gets together to appreciate each other as fat and try to be proud of it. This group was featured on TV and is sort of like a’ right to be fat’ movement. In spite of their declarations, only a limited number of the people really seem comfortable as heavyweights.
