In China’s traditional culture, it is firmly believed that young ladies should keep their virginity before getting married. Some, especially the old generation, advocate taking virginity pledges, which means assurance of no premarital sex, while the younger generation has a more causal attitude to it. What is your opinion about virginity pledges? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

Virginity Pledges: Just a Matter of Choice Recently, a 38-year-old single woman in China who remains a virgin and earns herself a title of "Virgin Goddess" has caused a heated debate on virginity pledges and a reexamination of our attitude towards premarital sex. As we are now living in an open and tolerant world, I think we should allow people the freedom to choose to be virginity pledge takers, non-pledge takers or even pledge breakers. On the one hand, we must recognize the benefits of the virginity pledges. It is an undeniable fact that virginity pledges are able to delay, if not prevent, sexual intercourse. According to a research finding, virginity pledge takers eventually have sex on average 18 months later than non-pledge takers. The delaying of sexual intercourses will help to alleviate the problem of teenage pregnancy, abortion, single parent and many other socially sensitive issues. Teenagers all have their impulsive moments, which might cause regrettable consequences. If they have peers who take the virginity pledge together, they will form up a "support group", where like-minded people help each other to stick to the pledges. That is why statistics have shown that female pledge takers are 30-50% less likely to bear an out-of-wedlock child than non-pledge takers. Considering the postponed sexual encounters and smaller likelihood of a single-parent child, we should not despise those who would like to reserve their virginity till marriage. On the other hand, the choice of not taking the virginity pledge or breaking the pledge should also be respected. Usually, non-pledge takers and pledge breakers are denounced as immoral, irresponsible and lack of self-control by those who refuse premarital sex. This name-calling and overboard criticism are not constructive to the problem solving. If one is really in love with someone else and the passion is in full swing, it would be cruel to fight against his inner self and abstain from sex. In this context, we need to make sure that the sexual encounter is conducted in a protective manner. Basic knowledge of avoiding being pregnant should be introduced to young lovers, instead of handcuffing them with the idea of immorality. Above all, when we demand youngsters to say "no", we also need to provide a clear guidance for them to say "yes", protectively. In conclusion, taking virginity pledges or not is a matter of choice. If you want to remain virgin until marriage, you are most welcome to preserve the virginity for your spouse. But if you are ready to enter into the next level of the relationship, instead of rushing into it, you should be aware of the importance of protected sex as well.
