10 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Let Your Child Play with a Smartphone
Before you hand your smartphone to your kids to keep them quiet, know this: pediatric occupational therapist Chris Rowan has outlined 10 reasons why you shouldn’t.
Children aged 3 to 5 who are exposed to technology more than four hours a day—including the use of handheld devices like cell phones, tablets, and electronic games—could develop serious behavioral problems and even child developmental delays.
So, Rowan is calling parents, teachers, and even the government to ban the use of all handheld devices for children under the age of 12. In this post over at Huffington Post, Rowan explained 10 reasons why, summarized below:
1. Exposure to technology is bad for rapid brain growth of children from 0 to 2 years of age.
2. Technology use restricts movement, and thus results in delayed physical development.
3. TV and video game use correlates with increased obesity.
4. 75% of kids who use technology in the bedroom have sleep deprivation.
5. Technology overuse is a factor in child depression, anxiety, and other mental illness.
6. Violent media can cause child aggression.
7. "Digital dementia": too much digital media cause decreased concentration and memory.
8. 10% of children aged 8 to 18 are addicted to technology.
9. Potential radiation emission from digital devices.
10. The way children are raised and educated with technology is unsustainable.

Should Your Child Be Forbidden to Use a Smartphone? The use of advanced technology in kids’ lives is common, as even more families with kids have more smartphones than ever before. Some harried parents rely on the devices to prevent their kids from melting down in a restaurant or a long line at the grocery. And many young parents are increasingly turning to smartphones to distract their children’s attention while running errands. That worries pediatric occupational therapist Chris Rowan who has outlined 10 reasons why parents shouldn’t let kids use smartphones. Is it smart for a parent to give a smartphone to the kid? Will it merely be a tool for the kid to stay in touch with parents? Or will it go beyond that? As far as I’m concerned, parents should consider its negative impacts on the child’s growth before putting it in his or her hand. First of all, smartphones may alter the parent-child relationship despite their convenience. The connectivity attached with smartphone use can not be the same as the genuine connection between the parent and child. Secondly, a smartphone in the bedroom will cause kids to get less sleep, later bedtime and more fatigue. Lastly, by engaging kids in so many activities, a smartphone can become a source of addiction, which jeopardizes their overall development. In short, parents ought to be concerned about the impacts that a smartphone can have on their kids. In judging whether a child should be given a smartphone, parents should mull over factors like the kid’s level of tech know-how and maturity.
