In July 2015 , British Petroleum agreed to pay $ 18.7 billion to some coastal states. That money will help pay for environmental and economic restoration efforts.
About 70 percent of the shrimp that Americans eat has traditionally come from the Gulf of Mexico. (5) But large areas of the gulf were closed to fishing after the oil spill and seafood business had to look to other areas for shrimp.
Coastal fishing areas are now open. But the owner of a seafood company say; many of his former buyers never came back. (6) Owner Dean Blanchard says his business is probably losing $20 million a year in sales. Mr. Blanchard says oil companies, in general, do not care for their equipment in the Gulf. He says these companies only think about profits and do not care about the environment.
Studies have found oil and other chemicals on the sea floor of the Gulf and if the shells and bodies of different kinds of animals. There are different opinions or how serious the problem is. (7) A government official says a full recovery will require a great deal of effort and can take many years.
