Children’s stories such as "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Three Little Pigs" have depicted (描写,描述 )wolves as frightening animals. In reality, these animals are social, nurturing creatures. They often spend the better part of their day playingWith and tending to their young.
There are two recognized species ofWolves: the greyWolf and the redWolf. Canislupus, the greyWolf, is the largestMember of theWolf family.
The greyWolf had one of theWidest distributions of allMammals on the planet. It once roamed North America, Europe, and Asia, but years of persecution(迫害) have reduced its numbers significantly, especially in Europe.
In Alaska, the northwest territories, and the former Soviet Union, the greyWolf has a thriving population. In the Northwest United States, however, the greyWolf is almost extinct,With a population of perhaps 30 . Further south in the United States the grey has disappeared completely. InMexico, researchers estimated that fewer than 10 greys survive.
The greyWolf became extinct in England about 1486; it disappeared from Scotland in 1743 and from Ireland in 1770.
