DIY, or do it yourself, has been a trendy option for many young couples. Instead of paying the professionals, they procure the materials and do the decoration, the assembling and some construction work by themselves. Some people, however, think DIY is not a leisure but a burden, considering a long and tiring working day. What is your opinion? Do you encourage DIY in home improvement projects among young couples? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

The Advantages of DIY Since home furnishing materials can be easily fetched in the supermarket and simply constructed, many young couples are now able to do the home improvement by themselves. Though it is a time-consuming issue and involves a lot of physical labor, I think DIY should be encouraged, because it is a rewarding journey, promised with fun, knowledge and above all money-saving. First of all, DIY offers the pleasure that could not be found in the job. Many young couples sit all day long in the offices, with their eyes glued to computer screens. DIY is an exciting contrast to this tedious routine and helps to relieve stress. Just imagine the cabinet boards you and your wife are piecing together. It is surely a great joy to do it by you both, during which you can talk and discuss. Once the cabinet is done, I’m sure a sense of achievement will be hovering over you. Nothing can compete with a smile the one you love wears. Moreover, the experience itself provides an opportunity to improve a sense of cooperation between you, which might become a source of strength and unity to enable you to tide over possible future difficulties. In other words, the physical labor involved is leading you to the right balance between life and work and a functioning relationship. Secondly, DIY rewards you with a host of knowledge of home improvement. If you pay professionals to do the decoration, it is true that you can lay back and lead a carefree life. Nevertheless, by undertaking the improvement projects yourself, you can acquaint yourself with the basic and interesting knowledge of interior design and furnishing. With this, you are no longer a couch potato, but progress into an amateur designer, carpenter, and even gardener, the skills of whom will give you a sense of achievement. Finally, and perhaps most significantly, DIY helps young couples save money. Chinese young couples have enough money-consuming issues to deal with, ranging from housing to medical care and beyond. As CPI is soaring, some couples, with their moderate salaries, cannot afford great living expenses. Paying extra fees for home improvement projects might make the situation worse, and might be the last straw to break their backs. Fortunately, DIY provides an alternative. With half of the price, you can purchase the furniture components and assemble it yourself. Hours of labor can save you up to thousands of RMB, which could be spent on purchasing another item. To conclude, it is fair to say that DIY is a plausible and advisable option for Chinese young couples. They will find that the process is gratifying in terms of the happiness shared, the skills acquired and the money saved.
