Now in many cities, such as Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan, passengers are not allowed to eat or drink on subway trains, and violators shall be fined. Should foods and drinks be permitted on subway trains? The debate has been raging in China for a long time. The government and passengers show different attitudes. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and then give your view on the issue.
Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.
Yes:
According to the law and regulations, items that pose a threat to the security of passengers are not allowed to be taken into subways. However, foods and drinks do no harm to passengers’ safety, and therefore should not be forbidden. Besides, it is every citizen’s right to eat and drink on public transportation. This right should not be deprived of by the government.
When passengers have to travel by subway for a long time, it is necessary for them to eat and drink. If foods and drinks are forbidden, it will cause inconvenience to some elderly passengers and children. In addition, in order to save time many young people have to eat breakfast on subway trains when they go to work in the morning. The new regulation will affect their normal life and work.
No:
It is every citizen’s responsibility to build a clean and healthy public environment. Some passengers bring foods and drinks to subway trains and litter everywhere. This inappropriate behavior makes the subway trains messy and untidy. For tourists who travel by subway, they will inevitably have a terrible impression of the city.
The subway carriage is a relatively closed space, and therefore any unpleasant smell can easily spread inside it and cause uncomfortable feelings among passengers. Some foods and drinks often carry strong smell. Although it is of no harm to people’s health, the unpleasant smell may make other passengers sick.

答案
Should Passengers Eat and Drink on Subway Trains? In recent years, eating and drinking on subway trains has been found more and more common, which has triggered many problems. Thus, in some cities passengers are forbidden to do that and violators would be fined. There has been a raging debate over the new regulation. Some believe that eating and drinking on subway trains doesn’t threaten the safety of the subway operation and passengers. Others want to curb the bad behavior so as to make the public environment clean and tidy. As far as I am concerned, eating and drinking on subway trains is indeed improper behavior, but it is also not reasonable to deprive citizens of that right. On the one hand, eating and drinking on the subway trains should be discouraged. The government should attach more importance to educating citizens and call for cultivated and eco-friendly behavior on public transportation. Announcements and posters can be used to encourage people to create a better environment. On the other hand, it is every citizen’s legal right to eat and drink and no one can deprive them of that. With regard to the pregnant, the elderly, the sick and the weak, the government can allocate them special space to eat and drink. In conclusion, the behavior of eating and drinking on subway trains should be discouraged, but people’s rights should be protected.
