A man who hopes to dig a well is so impatient that he will try at a different location if water doesn’t appear after a plot is given a quick dig. He gives up a plot increasingly quickly, seemingly because growing disappointment makes persistence more and more intolerable. Finally, his patience is exhausted. He returns home sadly, leaving three deep holes which would be wells if more efforts were made. The caption summarizes the message of this picture; that is, if a person is habitually impatient with the lack of results, he will be likely to achieve nothing. All things in the world develop in accordance with their own laws. Spring comes after winter, which will never change because people dislike cold and desolation. If people were preoccupied with the relentless pursuit of speed, wishing their endeavor could soften the undesirable effects of natural laws, they would eventually feel regret about their conceited optimism, even though temporary success sometimes appeared. An old Chinese story illustrates this philosophy. One day, a man was dismayed about the seemingly slow growth of his crops. He wished for an overnight harvest and lifted all his crops. After a day’s hard work, the crops in his field looked temptingly tall and glorious. However, the next day when he came back, all his crops withered and died.
