2001 -- Terrorists hijacked(劫持) several planes on Sept. 11,2001. Two knocked into New York’s World Trade Center (WTC), toppling(使倾倒) the two highest buildings in the city. A third seriously damaged the Pentagon. The fourth hijacked plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Several thousand people were killed in the attacks.
