41 sharing, which is more common in an economic downturn, distributes in the hardships
42 among a company’s entire workforce by slicing a few hours off everybody’s workweek
43 and cutting pay. Job sharing lets two employees to share a single full-time job and split the
44 salary and benefits. When a company adopts to work sharing instead of laying people off,
45 nearly everyone stands up to gain. Employees are less anxious about being unemployed and
48 are thus willing to spend more money, which it helps local merchants stay in business.
47 Because most employees keep their jobs rather than being "bumped" from one job to the
48 another by those employees with seniority, that quality remains high. When business surges
49 forward again, companies that have instituted work sharing are better equipped to meet with
50 the stepped-up demand because they do not have to call back old employees or train new
51 ones. Employees are also more willing to put in long hours for a company that helps with
52 them through a tough spell. Job sharing, by contrast, is a voluntary solution to what the needs of working parents, employees going back to school, and the like.
