答案Reading habits - What are some of the reasons that people read? Well, people read out of different purposes. I remember there is a famous Chinese old saying that reading provides our mind with food; reading can make us rich; and reading can help us appreciate beauty. It seems that books can bring us everything and most of our desires can be all fulfilled. To some extend I agree with this, since in the past, reading is a major form of entertainment and the storage of knowledge. For modem people, with these two functions still remain, reading seems to have become a luxurious pastime in this internet era. But reading can help with building our way of thinking, that’s why reading will never die now or in the future. - What types of books are most popular in your culture? As I know, Chinese people like reading history stories because China is a country with 5,000 years history and it’s one of the cradles of eastern culture. Although modem China has changed dramatically from the ancient empire, people are curious about what life was like in the ancient dynasties, the stories of the emperors and scholars, the record of the great wars and the household-famous legends and folk tales. Some popular historical fictions are adapted into drama series or movie, which also become great hits. Writers who write historical novels earn a great deal from book sales. From history, we can learn from success and mistakes to guide our future path. I want to quote a very famous motto that "histories make men wise; through the past we can foresee the future". I guess that’s why people like history so much. - What is your opinion about reading for fun and reading for purpose? I think we can and we should have both. Reading for fun is necessary. Sometimes you read just because it could amuse you and give you the moment to relax your mind and find inner peace. It’s like talking to the author and to some extent, it can change your mindset and temperament fundamentally without notice. Sometimes we just want to increase our knowledge or try to learn some new skills so that reading may become pragmatic, like reading a receipt book in order to learn cooking. It’s useful and you could have fun during the reading too. Changes in reading - Do you think people read more in the past than they do now? Why or why not? From my perspective, people don’t read as much as they did before. Many factors contribute to this change. First of all, the content of reading has been altered. More people tend to read short comments and instant messages on cell phone and tablet instead of paper books. Moreover, many would prefer to play games, chat with friends, and have other forms of entertainment through internet rather than spend a great deal of time reading books. They even think that reading is a waste of time since we can almost find everything through the internet. Why bother to do reading which is so time-consuming? - How has the technology influenced people’s reading habits? In many aspects, technology has radically changed people’s reading habits. People used to have printed textbooks on classes. Nowadays, it’s reported that some of our middle schools, or even preschools would offer Apple tablet to students for study purposes. What’s more, plenty of technology companies try to manipulate people’s reading form by marketing and promotion of digital products, such as Kindle if I may introduce. The aim is to divert people’s reading habits from paper books to digital ones. Last but not least, people now favour in quick, shallow reading, rather than deep reading. They deny long articles let alone a book with countless pages. - Do you think in the future printed books will disappear? Why or why not? Definitely not Although new technologies keep emerging and people’s reading habits have been changed, I don’t believe that printed books will eventually vanish. Paper books can offer better reading experience and won’t do as much harm to eyes as digital screen does. For people who like to take notes during reading, paper books are better to write on than cold hard screen. Besides, some readers are in favour of traditional reading form, such as children and the old In my opinion, printed books still have great value and it will not disappear in the foreseeable future.
