答案 Teacher Shortage Teaching, as one of the greatest professions, is what some people choose at the beginning and do for the rest of their life. However, fewer people than ever are willing to choose the profession, which causes a national teacher shortage in China. The teacher shortage does not mean that no one is to fill in the position, but not as many excellent graduates as needed are recruited. Most graduates take teaching as the last choice. There are two major reasons for this phenomenon. It is obvious that teaching is not an economically rewarding profession. Teachers are paid considerably less than other professions that require a similar amount of education and skill. And the distance is becoming unreasonably large. A new graduate in a joint venture can earn twice or three times as much as a retiring teacher. Therefore, teaching proves to be an unpromising career. This is not a unique Chinese phenomenon. In America, the average starting salary for a teacher in New York is 32,000 dollars a year, 10,000 dollars below the national average. Even worse is that some schools in rural areas delay teachers’ salary for several years. In this case, few ambitious young people would like to be a teacher. Meanwhile, teaching is a tiring and demanding job. A teacher’s task cannot be calculated by days because their working time is far longer than eight hours a day. Preparing for lessons and correcting students’ homework can constantly stretch a teacher’s working time to midnight. Working overtime becomes a routine task for nearly every teacher, and no extra, rewards can be given. It seems unacceptable to some graduates. Now it is high time we paid teachers an appropriate amount for what they do. Otherwise how can we retain and recruit excellent teachers to improve the education in China?
