terials. Modern books consist of printed pages bound between protective
covers. The earliest survived works that may be classified as books were (6)______
produced in Egypt and Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) about 5,000 years ago.
The wedge-shape letters characteristic of cuneiform script was pressed into (7)______
the damp clay. Gradually papyrus scrolls replaced the clay tablets because
of the Aramaic language, which could not easily be transcribed in cuneiform
characters. Papyrus scrolls were made of flat strips cut from the stem of the (8)______
papyrus plant. The strips were pasted together to form long sheets. A stick
was attached to each end of the sheet, which was then wounded up to form (9)______
a scroll. The papyrus could be easily carried and stored, and it was poor for (10)______
preserving records. Eventually parchment (the specially prepared skill of an
animal, usually a sheep or a goat) replaced papyrus as a writing material.
