Did you know that vegetables can be tricked into growing in climates they are not accustomed to? Coal climate vegetables are now able to be grown in places as hot as Hawaii. In Hawaii, marine engineers have been ’able to actually convince such vegetables that they’re living in cooler climate. That way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have been using is very simply cold sea water. How do they use it? They place pipes in the soil and the cold water flow in through them cools the air. This stimulates plants growth and enables gardeners in tropical climates to grow crops from cooler climates. Also some of these pipes are exposed to the air and they condense moisture and thus irrigate the garden. What’s especially appealing about this process is that nothing damaging to the natural environment is being used. Another innovative use for cold ocean water is to coal buildings. Engineers believe that, for example, the entire west coast of the United States could be air-conditioned using sea water.
选项
A、To transport water to higher place.
B、To transport vegetables quickly.
C、To bring nutrients to the soil.
D、To adjust the soil temperature.
答案
D
解析
本题问的是为什么工程师们在夏威夷使用管道?从短文中可以听到“They place pipes in the soil and the cold water flow in through them cools the air. This stimulates plants growth and enables gardeners in tropical climates to grow crops from cooler climates.”使用管道是使温度降低即调节土壤温度。因此,选项D为正确答案。
