Many parents focus their attention on looking after the only child. Then there is much controversy these days a-bout whether a mother’s first duty is to her children or to her career. People with a conservative attitude claim that a mother should devote all her time to looking after her children. On the other hand, people who consider themselves progressive say that her regular job comes first. The first point of view has a lot to be recommended. It is true that children, especially young ones, need constant attention, and should not be left alone for long periods. Besides, say the conservatives , it is the husband’s duty is to earn the family income, and the wife’s duty to do the housework and raise the children. The opponents of this standpoint point out that these days it is getting more and more difficult for a family to live on one’s income. So a wife should work, if she can, to help to support the family. As for the children, they say, both husband and wife should share the burden of looking after them. In China, traditionally young children are looked after by their grandparents. A revival of this custom could allow both parents to go out to work, and the children would still be taken care of. That way, would not only make both the conservatives and progressives be satisfied, but let the elderly have a worthwhile role to play in the family.
