Police in the UK have launched a stop and search program around three Manchester universities this autumn in a bid to reduce the number of crimes against students. Since recently there have been more criminal activities happening on campus than ever before, universities have become more concerned. The new program covers the campuses of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan Universities and the Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. A great many uniformed police officers have been deployed around these areas to keep order. They are being allowed to stop and search anyone without grounds of suspicion around the campuses. The plans will be in force for the first three weeks of every term. A police spokesman said that it was very important for students to be aware of the increased risks of crime directed at them. The policy was welcomed by many at the beginning of this term, when thousands of new students descended on the city. Over 62,000 violent crimes were recorded last year by the police in Greater Manchester area, which covers 500 square miles, that is 1,280 square kilometers, and has a population of 2.58 million. Dan Sims, 21, a UK student who is majoring in English language and literature, was definitely in favor of the scheme. "Manchester has such a high crime rate and anything to reduce this would be beneficial to and welcomed by both students and the whole area in general." Sims said.
    9. Why is the stop and search program proposed?
    10. What kind of people can the police stop and search?
    11. What is the students’ attitude toward the program?

选项 A、Any suspect on campus.
B、Anyone on campus.
C、Students without ID cards.
D、Visitors to the campus.

答案B

解析 短文提到,根据本次行动计划,在校园周边,身穿制服的警察有权拦截和搜查任何人,即使没有怀疑的理由也可以这样做。故B为答案。without grounds of suspicion指用不着有怀疑的理由,由此可否定干扰项A。
