I’ve heard a saying: "You’ll learn more about a road by traveling it than by consulting all the maps in the world." This saying is intended to tell us that a direct experience is superior to a second-hand one. I totally agree with this saying. It is quite impossible to consult all the maps in the world only for learning about a road. Even if we could, the information we get would still be less than we experiencing it. This saying is also true in many other aspects. Learning swimming is a case in point. We can never become a swimming master without jumping into the pool no matter how many swimming technique books we’ve read. That’s because we are personally on the scene. What we see, hear, smell, taste and touch are so complete and real that no indirect experience can be comparable. In order to get more direct experience, we’d better jump out of the comfort zone and personally practice as much as possible, instead of learning only from books or media. Only by doing so can we get a first-hand experience.
