In the picture, two schools are featured. On the left is an ordinary middle school with small and shabby buildings. On the right is a key middle school with high and glamorous buildings. Both of them are middle schools intended for compulsory education. This picture vividly illustrates the great disparity between ordinary middle schools and key middle schools, with the latter receiving more and better resources than the former. In my opinion, this disparity should not be allowed in the stage of compulsory education, because the purpose of compulsory education is to ensure equal education opportunity for school-age children and teenagers. If the gap exists, the Matthew effect will occur—the good get better and the poor get poorer. With better resources, the key middle schools will attract more excellent students and teachers, resulting in producing better graduates. On the contrary, given the poorer resources, the ordinary middle schools will end up with ordinary students and teachers, leading to producing ordinary graduates. To sum up, we should not label or make a distinction between ordinary middle schools and key middle schools in the stage of compulsory education, for it violates the principle of educational equality.
