In a few months’ time you are going to graduate from university and most will have to find jobs. You can either choose to work as a junior clerk in a big company or at a comparatively higher position in a small one. For young graduates, is it better to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond? The following are opinions from two sides. Read the excerpts carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should:
1. summarize briefly the opinions from both sides;
2. give your comment.
Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.
Executives
Chris Abraham, the President and COO of Abraham Harrison Public Relations: If you want to be in a famous company, then you’d better have perfect performance. Yes, the big pond is a great place to swim in, but beware of getting left behind. Otherwise, you’ll be the dumbest person at GM, because the pressure is too heavy for you to shoulder. That’s right—if you can’t take the heat, then stay out of the kitchen.
Blake Hall, CEO of Troop ID: As a small fish, I enjoy the freedom to be a "freshman" and work on career, leadership, and growth at a pace that’s as quick as I can make it. I love having mentors, being able to ask questions, and absorbing content from dozens of departments. There’s no pressure to succeed at everything because I’m the small fish!
Jessica Herrin, the founder of Stella & Dot: Being a green hand, you will benefit much more and learn much faster in a well-known organization. You should find the biggest pond you can, and don’t worry about your relative size. Being a big fish in a small pond sucks—you will hit the ceiling on what you can achieve quickly, and nobody will care. Optimize at all times for being in the most dynamic and exciting pond you can find. That is where the great opportunities can be found.
Graduates
Uni-king from China: Nobody would like to be controlled by others, so the best choice is to be a big fish in a small pond. But there is a problem of money and experience. My suggestion is; at the beginning, you work in a company and work for others; and when you have enough money and much experience, you can set up your own company, and thus, you become a big fish in a small pond.
Chester from India: Personally I prefer to work in a small enterprise, where I am more likely to be promoted. To be frank, I’d rather become a well-known and important figure within my own small pond than swim as an unknown and small shrimp in a big golden pond. I don’t feel like listening to others all the time and pretending I’m inferior to them. I enjoy the feeling of being a decision maker.
Lucien from Australia: The big fish is a fun position. I set the standards, I do the mentoring; the success or failure of the strategy is on me, and that pressure forces me to get up every day and be great. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to be my own master. But I have to be self-taught and make decisions without much help or guidance. That’s much different from being taught and guided.

Big Fish or Small Fish? With graduation around the corner, most seniors are on the point of finding employment. Yet, they are facing a dilemma. Just as there are distinct differences between being a small fish in a big pond and being a big fish in a small pond, so it is with working as a subordinate in a large enterprise and presiding in a small firm. It’s rather common for the young graduates to believe that you can derive a deep sense of satisfaction from being the master of one’s own. Besides, you have greater responsibilities and better prospect of promotion. But you have to deal with a great many things without much help or guidance. However, executives hold the opposite view. They argue that you have the chance to learn from experienced clerks and know about the standard working process in large companies. In addition, there, you may experience more fierce competition, which drives you to go forward with all your might. Pondering over this pressing question for long, I think whether you are a small fish in a big pond, or a big fish in a small pond, you are still you. You yourself never change; just you use two different standards to measure you. Working as a junior in a large business enables us to accumulate better experience and offers us a broader horizon. While being somebody in a small firm, we can enjoy more freedom, learn to shoulder more responsibilities and make decisions on our own. As a consequence, both can teach us something about ourselves and give us a chance to expand our skills. Each comes with its own special set of challenges. Neither should be eliminated because of your current level of comfort or confidence. There are advantages to every pond size. Therefore, I hope we young graduates can get the chance to be both big fish and small fish. Then big fish again and small fish again. It’s the cycle of viewpoint that increases our development.
