W: I hate walking into our building in the morning! All the smokers stand around the building’s entrance puffing away…I can’t take it! Sorry, I’m just a little bit upset.
M: That’s OK. I understand. A lot of people really hate smoke.
W: I’m glad they banned smoking inside the office, but I wish I didn’t have to smell it while walking on the street. It makes me feel awful. I simply can’t understand why a person would want to smoke.
M: Well…I used to smoke a lot, but I quit about 20 years ago. You know smoking can definitely damage your health. Most people would have quit if they could already know the dangers of smoking.
W: What do you think is the best way to persuade people out of smoking?
M: I think the best way forward is to push education efforts for young people. Most of the time, they choose to smoke because they think it is cool. If we can convince the next generation that smoking isn’t "cool, " eventually we might be able to eradicate smoking. People’s attitudes need to change.
W: Right. And also, the prices of cigarettes were increased in order to control smoking. However, the current high prices might not confine most people as it was expected to. You know as cigarettes get more expensive, smokers tend to look for a cheaper option and they will turn to fake ones. I wonder if those would be even worse than the originals!
M: You’re probably right. But I do think smoking will not be nearly as common a couple decades from now. A newspaper report says that New Zealand hopes to eradicate smoking by 2025.
W: That’s not that long from now! Maybe I should start thinking about moving to New Zealand!
M: Perhaps you should!
