The bar chart shows the reasons why it is hard for a college graduate to find a job. The overwhelming majority of the employers (57.1%) say that it is because college students have no hands-on experience. It is followed by overreaching expectations of students (42.3%) and financial crisis (36.9%). The three least identified reasons are ineffective employment policies (8.8%), overly demanding requirements of employers (9.1%) and industries being at the lower end (13.8%). The remaining three reasons are sandwiched in the middle, namely, students not being hardworking enough (33.7%), a huge population of graduates (23.4%) and mismatched majors (19.2%). The results, more or less, objectively reflect the hard time graduates experienced over the past few years. Therefore, it’s high time students worked on their competitive edge—working experience during "their college years. Work placements, internships, part-time jobs or even volunteering can help students improve their job prospect. Universities, at the same time, are advised to systematically support their students, by offering career consultancy and a wealth of hands-on opportunities.
