Listen to the following passage. Altogether the passage will be read to you four times. During the first reading, which will be done at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning. For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 15 seconds. The last reading will be done at normal speed again and during this time you should check your work. You will then be given 1 minute to check through your work once more.

For many people commuting is a necessary evil. / Most see going by car as the least worst option. / This study by the researchers in the US challenges that assumption. / It suggests walking, cycling or travelling by public transport / can lift the mood, making you feel better the whole day. / Crucially, it suggests those who switch from the car to an active commute / feel better across a range of psychological measures, / including concentration, decision-making and the ability to face up to problems./ The researchers say policies encouraging people to leave their cars at home / could have a dramatic impact on public well-being.
