E I’m going to give each of you a picture and I’d like you to first briefly describe and then give your comment on what you see in the picture. Candidate A,this is your picture. You have three minutes to talk about it. A My picture shows a kind of mass media—newspaper. In my picture, some students are reading the newspaper placed on the bulletin board. There are numerous kinds of newspapers which involve in almost every aspect of our lives, such as economy, politics and so on. It’s very convenient to buy newspapers, at the corner of street, in the supermarket, in the subway, etc.. And newspaper offers you great deal of information. E Thank you. Now,candidate B,could you please ask your partner a question? B Do you think newspapers will be replaced by the Internet in the future? Why or why not? A The news on the Internet has almost all the strong suits of newspaper. But I don’t think newspaper will be replaced by the Internet in the future. Firstly, the news on the Internet has almost all the strong suits of that of newspaper. For example, it has enough space to be devoted to a story. There are all kinds of attitudes tor-wards the events offered by Internet, and you can also take part in discussions that are very interesting. Secondly, you need not buy newspapers every day. Although it’s very cheap to buy a newspaper, if you keep buying a newspaper every day for several years, the expenditure will be considerable. Internet is comparatively cheaper. Finally, it will not cause the waste of natural resource or environment damage, because paper is made from wood. The Internet is helpful to environmental protection. E OK.Candidate B,here is your picture. You also have three minutes to talk about your picture. B In my picture, a boy is surfing on Internet to get the information he needs. Internet is another important kind of mass media. You can visit numerous websites such as a mail site, a public agency, and a research agency. From Internet, you can get detailed information. For example, it’s very easy to get information on KFC. Just put in the key word like KFC, and then the search engine will give many sites on KFC. What you need to do is just to click and visit these sites, and it’s OK. Besides, the information is divided into many catagories. If you want to know something about mobile, there are several excellent websites. You can get acquainted with the price, strong suits and shortcomings of every kind of mobile that can’t be found in television or in the newspapers. E Thank you. Now,Candidate A,could you please ask your partner a question? A Do you think it is necessary to read newspapers when you can get the news on Internet? B For most of us today, Internet has become our main source of daily news. But I think it’s still necessary to read newspapers. It’s true that Internet news can vivid-ly bring into our living rooms dramatic events of singular importance, but it cannot cover important stories in the depth they may deserve because of its time limitation. On the contrary, print news excels in its ability to devote as much space to a story as is necessary, though it cannot compete with Internet visually. Besides, Internet is essentially a passive medium. Most importantly, if all of us get news and information exclusively from television, there will be a decline in general literacy. By contrast, although following and absorbing a newspaper article is a little bit hard as it requires a high level of mental involvement, it helps to develop one’s intellectual skills. So, it’s not necessary to read newspaper when we can get the news on Internet.
