Mandarin, or putonghua, is the standard service sector language in our country. But recently, employees at a big city’s subway station have been busy learning dialects of other parts of the country. Proponents say that using dialects in the subway is a way to provide better service. But opponents think that encouraging the use of dialects in public counters the national policy to promote putonghua. What is your opinion? Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic:
Are Dialects Just as Acceptable in Public Places?
In the first part of your essay you should state clearly your main argument, and in the second part you should support your argument with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or make a summary.
Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

Are Dialects Just as Acceptable in Public Places? As is known, China consists of 56 ethnic groups which inhabit both in modern cities and in remote mountainous areas. According to linguists, Chinese people, including all the 56 ethnic groups, speak hundreds of different languages or dialects. This is especially true in the southern region, where local people can not communicate well with those from nearby villages. Since the foundation of the PRC, the government has endeavored to popularize putonghua so as to promote efficient communication in people’s daily life. However, in recent years, it is noticed that local dialect programs hosted by local TV stations are popular in local regions. Some also found that employees at a big city’s subway station have been busy learning dialects of other parts of the country to cater to the needs of people from different areas. Media coverage of this phenomenon has evoked wide discussion and people with different opinions have not yet reached a consensus. As for me, I am of the opinion that dialects are acceptable in public places. Firstly, local dialects are acceptable if they are used to facilitate communication and information transmission. As mentioned above, there are 56 ethnic groups making up the Chinese population. In fact, not everyone from minority groups can speak putonghua fluently. In the remote areas and boundaries, people only speak their own dialects. Just as those dialect speakers would feel frustrated if they can not make themselves understood when they come to big cities, workers who speak putonghua would also have difficulty in communicating with local people when they have to work in those regions. Given this language barrier, dialect communication can provide convenience for better understanding and therefore dialects are acceptable on these occasions. Secondly, in a sense, the diversity of Chinese culture manifests itself in different local dialects. With the promotion of putonghua, a considerable number of local dialects have fallen out of use and hence become extinct. However, as cultural carriers, those local dialects turn out to be research materials for linguists and historians. If dialects are forbidden in public places, of course putonghua will reach out to a larger scale. As a result, the preservation of local dialects will be confronted with more difficulties. In that case, our future generations would not be able to appreciate the diversity of Chinese culture. To sum up, there are occasions on which dialects can facilitate communication and information transmission; dialects, as cultural carriers, are the reflection of the diversity of Chinese culture. Undoubtedly, dialects have other functions. With this consideration, I believe that dialects are acceptable in public places. Interview is frequently used by employers as a means to recruit prospective employees. As a result, there have been many arguments for or against the interview as a selection procedure. What is your opinion? Write an essay of about 400 words to state your view.
