Should museum entry be free? This has been an intensely discussed question for years. The following are the supporters’ and opponents’ opinions. Yes:
Museums preserve and display our artistic, social, scientific and political heritage. Everyone should have access to such important cultural resources, which offer educational opportunities to people of every age.
Museums have an important role in the protection and development of the historical and cultural relics of a country. Free access will encourage more people to find out more about their country and help promote feelings of national unity and identity, while promoting a better understanding of the foreign culture.
Free access to museums is an investment in the country’s cultural development and therefore is highly beneficial to the future prosperity of the whole country.
No:
Free entry may limit the development of museums. Without the revenue from entry fees, museums would not have enough money to collect and preserve exhibits and hold exhibitions of rare pieces.
If museums are funded entirely by public money, the government would not have enough money for other public services and facilities, such as hospitals, schools and stadiums. This will hinder the improvement of people’s whole well-being.
If museums are entirely funded by the government, they will lack an incentive to increase the number of visitors by enriching their collections and making them accessible for all.

Should Museum Entry Be Free? Visiting museums is a relaxing and enjoyable way to broaden one’s horizons. Hence, some people suggest that the admission should be free. They believe that free access is essential for the public to step into the museum and learn more about our culture and history. Besides, it can also increase the number of visitors, which will consequently help build people’s national pride and promote cross-cultural understanding. In the long run, it will exert substantial influence on the cultural development of the nation. In contrast, those against the suggestion claim that museums need to charge entrance fees in order to survive in the modern world. Furthermore, the government does not have sufficient funds to subsidize all institutions and there are other priorities that the government has to take into consideration. Free admission will only result in imbalanced allocation of funds. What’s worse, funded by the government, the museums will no longer care about the number of their visitors, and thus will stop catering to the needs of customers to hold popular exhibitions and offer convenient services. I believe there is no clear answer to this question as there are so many strong arguments on both sides. Perhaps it is possible for some museums to charge fees and for others not to, which will depend on the situation of each museum.
