Enjoyment and Responsibility Goes Hand in Hand It could be said that doing things one enjoys is easy, while doing things one does not enjoy is hard. However, at the same time, it can be said that doing things that are hard enables one to stretch and grow, to build character and discipline. In life it is not possible to only do those things one enjoys. Inevitably, there will be times when it is necessary to undertake responsibilities and tasks one does not find particularly enjoyable and would rather not do. For example, while I was in school, I had my favorite subjects, my so-so subjects that I did not care for, and then those subjects I thoroughly disliked. I college, I enjoyed philosophy, French and economics, tolerated math and history, and thoroughly disliked chemistry and biology. However, in order to graduate, I simply had no choice and needed to take all required courses. Not only that, but in order to graduate with honors, I needed to do well in all my subjects. After graduation, during my career, there were certainly times when my job included certain responsibilities and tasks which I would rather not have done. In my first position after my MBA, I needed to work extensively with my hand calculator "running numbers" on various analyses I would be doing. This was detailed work requiring focused concentration as one wrong digit could have dire consequences. After I became a manager, I never much eared to undertake employee job appraisal, which is a necessary aspect of any manager’s position. All my life, I have never cared to do housework of any kind. As a child, I had no choice, as it was required of me by my mother. I had to help out with household chores such as cleaning the house, washing the dishes, helping with the laundry. As an adult, I still do not enjoy these kinds of chores and, when possible, I pay someone else to do these for me. However, if there were no one else, I would have to do so myself, as these are all a necessary part of everyday life. In conclusion, it can be said that life is comprised of many experiences and varied responsibilities, some of which are enjoyable and some of which are less so. Sometimes we simply must undertake to do even those things we do not find particularly enjoyable. However, we usually find, after we’ve done something we initially did not wish to do, there is a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction.
