Read the following five short passages which are about speech. For Questions 61 to 65, match each part(61 to 65) to one of the statements (A to G) given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.
Part 1
Television has affected how people receive information. They are used to 15 or 18-miunte pieces on current-affairs programs, 12-minute segments within the act of a drama with commercials interrupting the flow of thought. Keep in mind what former U. S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey’s wife reportedly advised: "Darling, for a speech to be immortal it need not be interminable. "
Part 2
We’re human and tend to have lots of thoughts and more than a few opinions, ideas and insights. You have winnow it down.
Think of yourself as a prospector roaming the hills with a pack horse that carries your tools. If you pack the horse lightly you can move on and cover a lot of ground, maybe even hit gold. But if you load too many sacks on the horse, it’ll collapse and you’ll end up nowhere.
Part 3
It’s important to remember that your words must be bearable and comprehensible the first time out.
A lot of words sound alike. Often context will make things clear, sometimes not. Read your speech aloud to family or friends and ask them to stop you if they get confused. If they do, you can stick with the word you want to use if you feel it’s right, but make it more understandable by adding a clarifying phrase.
Part 4
Ronald Reagan always wanted a joke at the beginning of a speech because he needed the quick victory of laughter. It helped him relax. It also helped the audience relax.
This process can take time, so start it as soon as you begin thinking about the speech. When you ask for help, tell your friends the specifics of the event: where you’re speaking, why you’re speaking, what your subject is, who’s in the audience. Think about the timing of the speech. Is there a big sporting event on TV at the same time? If so, refer to the event and say something humorous about it.
Part 5
The old cliche is that you should always at the top of a speech, thank the people who invited you and the person who introduced you. The new cliche is that you should never do in this way. The thinking here is that it’s boring and predictable.
I don’t think it’s even boring to be polite. And saying thanks at the top has a practical purpose. While you’re doing it, the audience gets a chance to daydream and settle down. They’re going to daydream at some point anyway, and it may as well be before you get to the heart of your remarks.
Say your thanks in the manner, or with the tone, of someone who’s been invited to a party and just walked in the door to shake the host’s hand. Offer a compliment of a warm word.
That’s all that’s needed.
Now match each of the parts (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement.
Note: There ace two extra statements.
Statements
[A] Choose your words carefully.
[B] Speak loud and clear enough.
[C] No speech should last more than 20 minutes.
[D] Focus on one topic.
[E] The shorter, the better.
[F] Express your thanks properly in time.
[G] Humor is vital.
