Should Universities Charge High Tuition Fees? Nowadays, most universities in China require students to pay for their education, and the tuition fees are staying high, ranging from 3,000 to 20,000 yuan per year. Many people disapprove of the requirement as it imposes a heavy financial burden on ordinary families who support their children in college education. However, from where I stand, universities have sufficient reasons to charge high fees. First of all, universities need a large sum of money to offer good teaching resources. For example, they have to invest a lot in the construction or renovation of teaching buildings, multimedia equipments and their maintenance, acquisition of more books and Internet access for students and teachers. Besides, some reagents and instruments required for science classes are very expensive, especially those brought in from abroad. And above all, universities need to supply an excellent salary and benefits package to win over elite professors in various academic fields so as to build a competitive teaching and research team. In short, it is very costly to provide a satisfying higher education. Second, universities have to pay a lot to maintain a normal campus life. In China, most universities are like small self-sufficient communities: they offer students not only teaching and learning resources but also living facilities such as dorms, canteens, shops and hospitals on campus. Meanwhile, universities must make sure that essential supplies like water and electricity are adequate for thousands of students. Also, universities employ a number of service personnel such as cleaners and security guards to keep campus tidy and safe. In some cases, to take in more students, they have to extend campuses by buying new lands and building more facilities. None of the above would be possible without enough finance. Therefore, it takes large amounts of constant input to keep the campus life going smoothly, and tuition is part of its sources. Considering the above factors, universities cannot afford to cut down current tuition fees though it exerts great financial pressure on students from low-income families. In my opinion, a more practical way to resolve the conflict lies in establishing a new social institution favorable to disadvantaged students. For example, banks should be ready to provide them with interest-free loans; companies should also be encouraged to finance higher education; more educational foundations should be set up to improve the situation, too. Thus, with a joint effort, the development of both universities and students can be better secured. In conclusion, universities should not be blamed for charging high tuition fees. Though the requirement places a heavy financial burden on students and their families, the problem can be solved through joint social efforts.
