Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people are talking about friendship. For questions 1 to 5, match the name of each woman (1 to 5) to each of the statements ( A to G) given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET 1.
Ellen:
Woman keep up a running dialogue with their female friends, exchanging small pieces of everyday news as well as bringing them up to date with their intimate thoughts and feelings. Amongst women, it is not individual status that matters so much as being liked by their friends. When talking to other women, women tend to emphasize their failures rather their successes. Failures are seen as more "human", and they bring female friends closer in laughter and sympathy.
Mark Hill:
Men don’t have comparable friendships with other men. They may discuss business strategy among them, but talking about feelings is rare. A man may have a best male friend, whom he can consult in crisis, but this is quite likely to be someone he doesn’t see or speak to for months, even years.
Betty Smith:
So in conversations and relationships, women and men start from different viewpoints. The overall aim of women is to reach an agreement by discussion while the main aim of men is to make a practical decision swiftly. The approach women adopt can seem annoyingly indirect and ineffectual to men while the approach men adopt sometimes appears unnecessarily aggressive and unreasonable to women.
Rose:
My idea of friendship is different from that of yours. I don’t think there is such great difference between men and women concerning friendship. Deep and intensely felt emotions about friends are not confined by the two sexes. It all depends. We can see in our life that there are many men who have very intimate friends. There are also some women who tend to maintain independence for the sake of privacy.
Brian Tong:
I’ve never had a lot of friends. I’ve never regarded them as particularly important in my life. Perhaps that’s because I come from a large family —— two brothers and three sisters, and lots of cousins. That’s what really important to me. ff I need help, I can get it from my family.
Now match each of the people ( 1 to 5 ) to the appropriate statement.
Note: there are two extra statements.
Statements
[A] Disputes may also spring up among friends.
[B] No difference exists about the attitude toward friend ship between the two sexes.
[C] Whether you need other friends or not depends on your surroundings.
[D] Women tend to maintain a more intimate friendship among themselves.
[E] There can be no true friendship between men and women.
[F] Men are likely to be more practical in their friendship.
[G] Men and women have different ways concerning their communication and relationship.
