    According to researchers at the University of East Asia, there is a strong correlation between an employee’s happiness outside of the work environment and his or her ability to stay focused and enthusiastic in the workplace. The study of Japanese and Korean workers suggests that, in particular, those employees with strong relationships with family and friends, as well as those who actively participate in sports and hobbies, are more likely to be efficient and motivated workers. The findings are based on the results of a questionnaire sent out to over 1,000 respondents in each country.
    According to Professor Graham Sparkes, who led the project, these results present a challenge to firms across Japan and Korea, both of which often expect their employees to work long hours. instead, Professor Sparkes believes, companies should be willing to give their workers more leisure time, as they will reap the rewards of having more efficient employees in the long-term.
