问题     We question the utility and validity of the Worst Teacher Award conducted on 29 November by Undergrad, a Students’ Union magazine of our university. The main purpose behind the election was to give teachers an opportunity to review their teaching methods in light of the results.
Our concern is whether the election of one single teacher from each faculty by undergraduate students will substantially improve the quality of teaching. Surely this would be much better achieved by an extensive and standardized course-evaluation system.
According to the article on page 33 of the 3rd edition of Undergrad, the writer and his colleagues decided that it was time to "get their own back" on the teachers. There appears to be a strong aggressive tone on the whole. This seems contrary to the motive originally intended. We fear that an "unpopularity poll" is what really results.
This election was governed by the regulations of the Best Teacher Award, which required a minimum of 15 percent of voters for the results to be valid. However, as there was a very poor turnout, 17 of the "winners" were elected by less than 15 percent, which greatly reduced the representativeness of the outcome.
The teachers involved are not even given details of the masons for voting. We wonder how the organizing body can help these teachers improve their teaching methods when the evidence for their performance cannot be produced. The whole exercise is therefore worthless without these reasons made available.
A few popular newspapers have reported on the election, but the data shown are misleading. They do not show how many students voted for the teachers, merely rows of vague percentages. Most of the articles do not even state the results of the election, but only the names of elected teachers. We object to their irresponsible behaviour to both the voters and teachers alike. We believe the whole university wishes to strive for excellence in a constructive way.
Our conclusion is that the Worst Teacher Award has, from the beginning, lost sight of its virtuous purpose and has turned into something that destroys the image of our university teachers and, far worse, the mutual relationship between teachers and students.
