PART THREE Collaborative task and discussion (about 7 minutes) Interlocutor: Now this part of the test you are going to discuss together. [Interlocutor points to the card showing the task while giving the instructions below.] Interlocutor: You have 30 seconds to read the task carefully, and then 3 minutes to discuss and decide a-bout it together. You should give reasons for your decisions and opinions. You don’t need to write anything. Is that clear? [Interlocutor places the card in front of the candidates.] Interlocutor: I’m jost going to listen and then ask you to stop after 3 minutes. Please speak so that we can hear you. [Candidates have about 3 minutes to complete the task.] A: The meeting should be a formal manner. In the meeting, reps of the clients and the company introduce themselves. The company can also talk about new products to seek opportunities for co-operation with the client. B:The company should show the clients about the city, and introduce the culture and the history of the city. A: Tour around the company and its factories should be arranged. The clients may want to know the production ability of the company and how various departments work. B: By having business lunch, relationship between the clients and the company may draw close. Business plans can be discussed over the lunch. A: We should give a company presentation, so basic information of the company will be introduced, such as the history of the company, its production ability, market share, annual revenue, financial status, etc. The presentation will give clients a direct understanding of the company’s operation and its profit-making ability. B: Sight-seeing should be arranged for the clients to look around in the scenic spots. Let them know more about the culture of the city. [Materials are collected.] [The interlocutor asks one or more questions as appropriate, to extend the discussion.] Follow-up Questions (1) Is it necessary for a company to establish a good long-term relationship with its clients? (Why? /Why not?) 公司是否有必要与客户建立一种长期良好的关系?(为什么?) (1)—Yes. A good long-term business relationship with clients means better understanding and greater trust between you and your clients. It will help ensue smooth and speedy business transactions between your company and your clients. (2)What do you think is the most suitable form of entertainment for foreign business clients? (Why?) 你认为对外国客户最适宜的招待方式是什么?(为什么?) (2)—The best entertainment is to take them to see places of cultural and historical interest. More background knowledge of our culture and history will give them more insight into our way of life and way of doing business. Our dynamic history and colourful culture will win more of their respect, in turn, this will help encourage their business interest in China. (3) What problems may arise when socialising with foreign business people? (Why?) 与外商交往时,可能出现什么问题?(为什么?) (3)—When interacting with foreign business people, problems may arise in different thought patterns, different ways of seeing the world, and different ways of decisionmaking. These problems are the result of cultural differences and will often lead to misunderstanding. (4) Do you think you would enjoy looking after business visitors for a few days? (Why? / Why not?) 你是否喜欢花几天时间照顾来访的客户?(为什么?) (4)—Yes, I do. I think it’s a great pleasure to do so. In the first place, it’s a great chance to introduce them to our culture and history. Secondly, socialising with business people will help me to acquire networking skills. Finally I may land business contracts from them. —No. For business visitors, "business is business". They never seem to wander away from this focus—they are always "on business" and show only lukewarm interest in anything beyond that. Once business is done, they are on their way to the next stop. So it’s really dull and boring, I don’t quite enjoy the time together with them.
