答案 The United Nations’ food and agriculture agency says China has seen a dramatic decline in rural poverty, but that the problem is on the increase in Africa and South Asia. The International Fund for Agricultural Development reported Monday that the overall rate of extreme poverty in rural areas has fallen from 48 percent to 34 percent in the past decade — due largely to the progress in China, where the economy has boomed. It said in sub-Saharan Africa, however, the numbers of rural poor have risen from 268 million to 306 million in the same time. The U.N. report said there was just a slight decrease in the rural poverty rate in South Asia, where some 500 million people in rural areas are still considered extremely poor.
