In a recent survey, when a group of first-year students were asked about their future career choices, some said they wanted to be a photographer, a pilot and so on. But to everyone’s surprise, a girl said, "I want to be a government official and a corrupt official because a corrupt official owns a lot of things". Most people took this answer seriously and thought something should be done to restore the distorted mentality of children. What are the possible measures that could be taken to remedy this situation? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

Right the Wrongs "But he isn’t wearing anything at all! " We all recall the naked truth uttered by the kid in the fairytale of The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen. Similarly, the girl’s brunt answer to express her aspiration to become a corrupt official is yet another bitter truth, urging us to re-examine the moral education in schools and the integrity of civil servants. To begin with, ethics education in schools should be emphasized and delivered in a more creative way. The curriculum in China mandates that students must take politics and ethics courses in compulsory education. However, as ethics courses carry little weight in students’ entrance exams, they are usually ignored in class and give way to other exam-related subjects, such as Chinese and math. Even if ethics courses are offered, teachers invariably adopt a rigid teaching method, or more precisely, preaching method. They list all the key learning points and ask students to memorize the supposedly "correct" answers. There is no wonder that students feel bored and weary after such a 40-minute lecture. Therefore, it would be better if teachers encourage students to engage in some real-life cases and probe into the moral implications. Professor Sandel’s lecture Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do, which raises student’s critical thinking through analyzing real-life cases, would be an excellent example to follow. Above all, schools should give more emphasis to ethics courses and cultivate students’ moral sense. What’s more, civil servants must live up to their mission of serving the people, not trading power and wealth with their morality. The girl’s answer, to a certain extent, testifies to the magnitude of corruption problem in China. As James Baldwin aptly puts it, "Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them." The shocking answer made by the girl is exactly the reflection of the adult world. No matter how hard we try to convince children the importance of morality, all the lectures and courses would be rendered meaningless if adults around them are compromising principles and seeking benefits at the expense of morals. In this regard, relevant departments must enhance the law enforcement to curb the corrupt officials and strive for a corruption-free government. To serve as a good influence for kids, it is better to lead by example than by empty words. In conclusion, an effective moral education at school and ethical civil servants in the society both contribute to the moral well-being of our children. Next time, we hope some students will answer, "I want to be a civil servant, because a civil servant can serve people."
