Though a tradition support base for Democrat candidates, Republican presidential hopefuls also eye the state for support.
Republican candidates are set to kick off a week of intense presidential campaigning in Southern California, with Republican front-runner Rudy Giuliani scheduled to make appearance on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Democrat Bill Richardson is also scheduled to speak to the public to counter the republican rivalry.
Giuliani will speak at the Republican Party of Orange County’s annual Flag Day Dinner in Irvine, with more than 1,000 people expected to attend the 250-dollar-per-person event, a party official said.
Participants in the sixth Asia Security Summit, which ended Sunday, agreed on more dialogue and understanding to promote security cooperation between countries.
The three-day summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, attracted more defense ministers and senior security officials from some 26 countries than in any previous Dialogue. Germany, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh participated in the ministerial and vice-ministerial level meetings for the first time.
The Dialogue consisted of a keynote address delivered by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and five plenary sessions featuring addresses by the defense ministers.
The topic of the sessions focused on the United States and Asia-Pacific security, efforts by China and India to build international stability, nuclear challenges, regional waters security, security cooperation in Asia, as well as progress in counterterrorism.
At least 48 Iraqis were killed in separate car bomb attacks in Iraq on Saturday despite a security crackdown in Baghdad launched by US and Iraqi forces two months ago to curb violence.
A car bomb hit a crowded bus station in a shopping area near a revered shine in the holy Shiite city of Karbala on Saturday, killing 40 people and injuring 60 others, the state-run television Al-Iraqiya reported.
The blast occurred less than 200 meters from the holy shrine of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Islam’s Prophet Mohammed, in Karbala, some 100 km south of Baghdad.
Romania on Friday rejected allegations that it hosted a secret prison for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
A report by Dick Marty, a Swiss senator, who investigated CIA activities for the Council of Europe after media reports on the secret prison emerged in 2005, said Poland and Romania hosted the secret jails to "kill, capture, and detain" those terrorist suspects of "high value."
It also named several high-ranking officials in Poland and Romania as being "aware of the CIA’s illegal activities on their territories," such as Romanian President Traian Basescu, his predecessor Ion Iliescu and former Romanian Defense Minister Ioan Mircea Pascu.
The Romanian Foreign Ministry expressed regret over the conclusion of Marty’s report, saying the report contained "no evidence to confirm these allegations, except for unnamed sources, whose credibility cannot be assessed."
Kenyan police on Friday killed three more members of a violent semi-religious sect which has engaged the country’s top paramilitary police units in four days of violent attacks.
The police said they had gunned down three suspected members of the outlawed Mungiki sect in a highway attack as the sect drove along Murang’a-Kangema road in central Kenya on Thursday night just hours after 11 others were killed in Nairobi’s Mathare slums.
The Police also recovered a revolver and two pistols during the shoot-out that occurred at about 11 pm local time.
Police Spokesman Erick Kiraithe said the gang members were intercepted while traveling in a saloon car which was also recovered.
